The “Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act” or as its better known “Arizona SB 1070″ is an issue that has placed immigration at the forefront of many a discussion in this nation. When I read the original bill as it was passed I was amazed (Less so everyday) that a law with so many opportunities for abuse and corruption was able to pass in a nation of people who have stood by the phrase “with liberty and justice for all.” Thanks to the outcry of many good citizens the bill has been revised in order to close up much of the area for abuse. That being said, there is still a problem in my opinion as to what reasonable suspicion of being a illegal immigrant really means in a melting pot of a nation such as our own. Just because a person doesn’t have a drivers license on them and maybe (illegally) jaywalking across the street with an accent is not probable cause for detention or arrest. It also is not a reason to sue the police if they choose not to ask for papers if someone has a tan and not a vehicle. In truth we need a bill where all Americans should have to show proof of citizenship. I agree that we need immigration reform, but to force police into trying to profile people in such a way is disrespectful to the general population, especially 2nd and 3rd generation legal immigrants and the hurtful to the newly legal immigrant community that is already un-trusting of law enforcement (due to abuse in other countries). This bill is un-American and definitely unacceptable.
